Lots of Brides and lots of bookings at the Portland bridal Show as wedding season begins. Many brides are waiting until the last moment to book their wedding photographer and they most likely will not get the photographers they want.
Put that at the top of the list and don't be disappointed by having to make do with a so so photographer, you will pay for it the rest of your life.

Choosing a photographer for your wedding.
Yes there are many photographers, but not all of them are professionals it is hard to choose. I feel for couples trying to wade through all those choices.
I would ask how long they have been in business. Even if they have been in business for three years, the first year they could have photographed one wedding (their friend) the following years maybe a few more. Look for someone in business for over ten years. Do they have many, many album samples to show. Do they remember film, get their take on how digital has changed the way they photograph a wedding.
Talk to the person get a feel for the character, if they are proclaiming how much they "Love" weddings maybe they are not concentrating on doing a great job. It is good to love weddings, but better still to have a passion to create beautiful photography and to tell your story.
Good luck on your search!

The Holidays are a great time to get family photos. The best photos are of just what your family and friends are doing on those days. Laughing together, opening presents, making dinner, setting the table. All to often I hear brides say to me "Beware of Grandma, she is relentless about getting photos." Give everyone a break from lining them up for formal snapshots, have fun with it.

Recently my fears have come to light. I was afraid with all these newbees starting photography businesses that brides and grooms would end up with nothing, really bad photos of their wedding or no photos of there wedding. These so called photographers got a new cheap camera called themselves photographers and because of the economic conditions of brides and grooms they have been able to create a windfall for themselves. There was a story on the Yahoo page of a couple that received 400 images of their wedding and only 20 of those images were marginally OK. The newbees give you deals 500 images, unlimited time. There are so many great deals, but the stuff is just bad photography on a disk and you are out the money and have nothing to show for it.
Well the great news is that there are still great photographers out there that can photograph your wedding. Remember when you budget, don't skimp on the photography budget, everything else is gone when the day is over, but the photography lasts forever.
Look at the examples the photographer has, is there creativity, good lighting, are those photographs of a wedding that they photographed or were the shooting behind the back of a professional at a friends wedding. Do they have lots of examples or just one dumb book.
Attend the wedding show (Portland Bridal Show, the big one), you can get good deals from professional photographers.
